The Honourable Clément Gascon Joins Woods
The Honourable Clément Gascon, formerly a judge of the Supreme Court of Canada, has joined Woods as senior counsel.
With 17 years of expertise and experience as a member of the Canadian judiciary following 20 years as a member of the Quebec Bar, his practice will be focused on domestic and international arbitration. He will also provide support and legal advice in insolvency and restructuring matters, as well as in general commercial litigation matters for the firm’s clients.
The Honourable Clément Gascon was a judge of the Supreme Court of Canada for five years, of the Quebec Court of Appeal for two years, and of the Quebec Superior Court for close to ten years. He was a lawyer in private practice with a national law firm from his admission to the Quebec Bar in 1982 to his appointment to the bench in 2002.
During his career as a judge and as a lawyer, he regularly taught and gave lectures at McGill University, Ottawa University, the Université du Québec à Montréal, and the Quebec Bar School. As well, he gave lectures and participated in seminars for judges and lawyers on commercial matters, class actions, legal writing and advocacy. A highly regarded speaker, he is also the co-author of several books, publications and articles in the legal domain.
“I am happy and proud to bring my contribution to a law firm with a solid and well-recognized reputation in both Quebec and Canada. At this new juncture of my legal career, I wanted to join a team of jurists that is professional, rigorous, stimulating and of a high caliber, with solid values of integrity, honesty and civility. In my view, this accurately describes the team I am joining at Woods,” said Clément Gascon. “At Woods, I will benefit from an ideal platform from which to practice arbitration both domestically and internationally. I will also be able to help strengthen the firm’s expertise in insolvency and restructuring, and to act as well as strategic advisor in commercial litigation cases. I am looking forward to working with this talented team of lawyers and to bring my contribution to the future development of Woods and to the continuous search of excellence that characterizes the firm.”
“It is a great honor to welcome the Honourable Clément Gascon,” said Caroline Biron, Managing Partner at Woods. “He brings almost four decades of expertise in private practice and in the judiciary, a definite asset for our team and clients.
