The Supreme Court of Canada ends the dispute and confirms a historic decision

On October 15, 2015, the country’s highest court dismissed Bell’s request for appeal in the famous piracy trial against Videotron, represented by our firm. The Supreme Court of Canada finally put an end to the case which had lasted a decade, by confirming Bell’s condemnation to pay to our client a historic amount of damages totalling $141 million for failing to prevent the piracy of its satellites.

In 2012, the Superior Court of Quebec allowed in part the lawsuit filed by Videotron and awarded an amount of damages of approximately $1 million. Three years later, the Quebec Court of Appeal gave reason once again to Videotron, but this time, by substantially increasing the amount of damages to $136 million. With interest and costs, Bell will have to pay to our clients an amount of $141 million.

The judgment of the Court of Appeal is available here
